Farmers Insurance is a very old company which has only recently become part of a much larger international corporation. Between its care and homeowners lines of insurance, Farmers serves over 10 million American families, making it one of the largest personal insurers in the country.
Farmers was formed in 1928 by two partners who had a vision of providing low-cost insurance to farm owners and ranchers. The company continued to expand into a variety of subsidiary lines such as fire insurance, and by 1988 had grown enough to interest international investors. That year, the British firm B.A.T. Industries purchased Farmers for $5.2 billion. At that time, Farmers was the third-largest car insurance company in the country.
Unfortunately, the international takeover seemed to signal a decline in the popularity of Farmers’ car insurance products. After several downturns and mergers with other companies, Farmers acquired 21st Century from competitor AIG in 2009, making it once again the third-largest personal insurer in the United States. Simultaneously, Farmers launched a series of targeted internet and television advertising campaigns designed to drawn in the masses already attracted by the ad campaigns of such powerhouses as Geico, Nationwide, and State Farm. Featuring actor J. K. Simmons from the popular “Law and Order” television series, these funny and ironic commercials are Farmers’ attempt to enter this competitive advertising market, and seem to have stirred up interest in the company once again.
Farmers Car Insurance Coverage
Farmers offers a wide variety of insurance products, including automobile, home, life, business, and motorcycle coverage. Car insurance lines include liability, collision, comprehensive, no-fault, uninsured or underinsured motorist, and medical payments. You can also purchase customized equipment coverage for vehicles which do not fall under regular categories of automobile insurance. Farmers offers flexible payment plans, deductible adjustment, and several ways to find the right amount of coverage at the right price for your needs.
Farmers offers accident forgiveness once in every three year period, provided you do not exceed a certain amount with your claim. This means that your premiums will not go up if the accident does not cost over a certain amount, and if you have no more than one every three years. If you have a new car, Farmers’ “new car pledge” promises vehicle replacement within the first 24,000 miles or two years, and the use of only factory parts for repairs. You can also purchase roadside assistance as a supplement to your policy and personal umbrella insurance to extend your liability coverage on all your insurance policies.
Farmers Collector Car Insurance
Farmers also offers special polices for collector car insurance, with actual value agreements, for those who have unique or collector cars. Farmers collectible insurance includes “no attendance” clauses so that your classic car is covered, for example, at a car show even if you are not with the car at all times. Farmers also offers no deductible and no mileage limitations on classic car insurance.
Farmers Car Insurance Discounts
Farmers offers discounts for a wide variety of categories to save customers money on car insurance. If you are a member of a special professional group, such as a doctor, nurse, or teacher, you may qualify for a special discount with Farmers. Retired professionals also enjoy unique discounts available to their professional groups. Homeowners, new parents, and students all qualify for discounts with Farmers, and teens get special pricing to help parents insure their new drivers. You can qualify for discounts by having more than one car insured, by having your homeowners and car insurance with Farmers, and by having safety devices, such as airbags, in your car. Farmers does not list all of its available discounts on its website because, as it states, some discounts are not available in all states. In order to find out exactly which discounts you qualify for, you should probably talk to a Farmers agent.
How do I buy Farmers car insurance?
Farmers sells its policies through direct marketing by phone and over its website, as well as through independent agents located throughout the country. Farmers pledges customer service, but finding an agent may not be easy. Most people have better luck going directly through the website than finding an agent close to them if they live in a remote area. However, the website is very user-friendly and invites customers to browse; telephone support is also available twenty-four hours a day.
The Farmers website does offer a variety of special features designed to draw customers, especially those who are younger and more at home with using the web. For example, Farmers offers a “related topics” tab on the right of the screen for every page you visit; if you cannot find your answer on that page, it is likely that you will be immediately directed to the right location. For those used to navigating web pages, this is a useful component to the web site. Farmers web site is designed to be easy-to-use, and offers full account management and access to agents if needed.
Farmers’ customers do not give it exceptionally high marks for customer service, however. According to the J. D. Power and Associates 2011 nationwide survey of car insurance customers, Farmers received “below average” scores in every category except “contacting the insurer,” in which the company received an average score. Overall, Farmers ranked 28th out of 30 companies reviewed, the lowest-ranked large company in the survey.
Farmers could be the right insurance company for you but the only way to know for sure is to compare car insurance quotes from multiple providers and make sure to compare policies with similar coverage. Enter your zip code above to start a car insurance comparison search online.
