Just What's Essential

  • Uber carries its own car insurance on drivers that goes into effect once the app is opened
  • Your personal car insurance would be used when you drive otherwise
  • You can add your own commercial auto insurance if you want higher coverage

While you are driving for the company, Uber insurance covers any damages that may stem from an accident. Uber does require that as a driver, you have personal car insurance in place that at least meets the minimum requirements in your state.

Although you don’t have to worry about Uber car insurance rates since coverage is free, your personal car insurance may go up.

Some companies will require that rideshare drivers carry a commercial policy, which makes it hard for them to find affordable car insurance.

You don’t have to buy Uber car insurance since the company provides it for you, but you can still shop around to get a great deal on your personal car insurance. Enter your ZIP code to compare quotes today.

What does Uber car insurance cover?

Uber driver insurance covers you while you are waiting for a ride request, en route to a pick-up, and during trips. Uber insurance coverage is different for each stage of the ride.

Coverages for each stage are:

  • Offline – your personal car insurance coverage is in place
  • Waiting for a ride request – Uber insurance provides 50/100/25 liability coverage
  • Enroute to pick-up and during trips – $1,000,000 third-party liability coverage, uninsured/underinsured motorist, comprehensive and collision coverage contingent on you having those coverages personally

Uber does require a $1,000 deductible before paying a comprehensive or collision claim but will pay up to the actual cash value of your car. Insurance for Uber drivers will also include personal injury protection if it is required in your state.

Uber also offers optional injury protection insurance to help cover expenses in the event of an accident. Coverage includes disability payments, coverage of medical expenses with no deductible or copay, and survivor benefits up to $150,000. This coverage is $0.04 a mile and is in effect while you are working.

If you drive for Uber Black, Uber SUV, or Uber Taxi, the company provides commercial car insurance for you.

You don’t have to worry about finding Uber car insurance quotes because the coverage is free.

Do you need personal car insurance to drive with Uber?

Most states require that drivers carry at least a minimum amount of car insurance to drive legally. Uber requires that its drivers meet the state requirements with their personal auto insurance.

Your personal car insurance wouldn’t be needed while you are actively working for Uber, but Uber won’t cover comprehensive and collision claims without you carrying it on your personal policy.

When do you need a commercial auto insurance policy?

Some auto insurance companies will require Uber drivers to carry a commercial policy, even though Uber supplies coverage for drivers. Adding this extra car insurance will help limit liability should you cause an accident.

However, NOLO reports that some car insurance companies will just let you add a rideshare endorsement to your personal policy. This endorsement covers liability and property damage to the driver’s car and is cheaper than a commercial policy.

There are many car insurance companies offering Uber insurance as an endorsement or commercial policy.

You don’t have to worry about finding affordable Uber car insurance, but you do need to find cheaper personal car insurance. Enter your ZIP code now to compare quotes for the best rates.
